ABOUT

As far back as I can remember, my life has revolved around Fashion, so in 2014, when I started this fashion-beauty-lifestyle blog it felt like the natural progression of a 24-year career in fashion and design. However, one morning, as I was getting ready for my 9 to 5 job as a Fashion Graphic Designer, I noticed dry patches on my face. After a week of home facials and special attention to moisturizing, a trip to my doctor’s office set me on a path to abstinence from all cosmetics including cleansers. A followup blood test revealed blood sugar levels so high that according to my doctor I should be in a coma… WOW.

How was that diagnosis even possible for someone who didn’t drink sugary pop and who actually used her gym membership? At the time, because I didn’t know the difference between Type-1 and Type-2 Diabetes I went on a rampage to eliminate refined sugar from my diet. And then there was the struggle to pinpoint the right insulin dosage to avoid those scary sugar lows that made me feel weak and jittery.

Fast forward to today: I’ve accepted that my Type 1.5 diabetes is hereditary and while it doesn’t totally define me, my lifestyle with diabetes now revolves around "how I eat" instead of Fashion.
When my anger gave way to knowledge, I started to learn a new food language to help me control my sugar levels. With my regular physician, a dietitian and sometimes an endocrinologist in tow, I changed how I eat (present tense) to hopefully delay the need for a higher prescription of insulin.

This blog talks about my ongoing journey to reprogram my life(style) with diabetes. It also factors in the abundance of information available online about how genetics, ethnicity, and geography may have played a role in the onset of my Type-1.5 diabetes.
My choices are personal and should not be taken as medical advice. Always seek the guidance of your doctor or specialist before you make dietary and/or lifestyle changes that may affect your health.
